Jim Thompson

Jim Thompson's legacy is rooted in his transformative efforts to save and popularize Thai silk. Born in 1906, Thompson was an American architect educated at Princeton who worked in New York and was involved in stage design for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo before serving in World War II. After the war, he settled in Bangkok and was captivated by the rich colors and textures of hand-woven Thai silk, an ancient craft that was rapidly declining due to competition from mechanized production and synthetic fibers. Believing that Thai silk would appeal to Western consumers, Thompson dedicated himself to organizing and supporting local artisans. He helped upgrade their looms, introduced new designs and techniques, and in 1950, founded The Thai Silk Company. The company was structured with majority Thai ownership, emphasizing his goal of sustaining the traditional livelihoods and dignity of local weavers and silk farmers. Leveraging his connections in New York's design and fashion circles, he successfully introduced the textiles to Europe and America. Jim Thompson fabrics quickly gained a devoted following among designers, couturiers, and costume creators, leading to Thai silk becoming world-renowned by the 1960s and establishing a luxury industry that economically benefited thousands of Thai families. Despite his mysterious disappearance in Malaysia in 1967, the firm continues to operate, upholding his vision of quality and social responsibility, and has grown significantly from 100 employees to over 1,300 today.
